A male Moose calf called Chocolate has been born, to 2-year-old parents Minnie and Melka. He is the first such calf to be born at the zoo for many years. |

A pair of Penguins called Pippa and Polly have arrived from Whipsnade Zoo, to join others in what will ultimately become a 200-strong colony at the new Penguin pool, England's largest, which opens to the public on May 27. |

The infant Gorilla born only 7 months ago has sadly died. He was injured when a scuffle broke out among all of the Gorillas when he and his mother were introduced to the new silverback male for the second time. He was treated for a broken arm but when he was brought off anaesthetic he was unable to breath for himself. Despite repeated attempts at resuscitation he could not be revived; it is believed he also suffered internal injuries during the scuffle. |

Six male Vicugna (pronounced 'vicunya') have arrived from Edinburgh Zoo, where a new breeding herd will be established. This group will act as a reserve pool of breeding males. |

Four baby Smooth-Coated Otters have been born, to mum Chea and dad Kong Kea who both came to Colchester from the Rare Species Conservation Centre in Kent last October. |

A female baby Przewalski's Horse called Charlotte has been born. She will be an important addition to the breeding herd, which is now 13 strong, as a lot of the females are now elderly. |

A female Wallaby joey called Pip has been born, but has been rejected by her mother and is therefore being hand-reared by a keeper. Once old enough, she will join the other free-roaming animals at the Children's Farm. |
