Birth: Bristol Zoo Gardens

A pair of Asiatic Lion cubs, a boy and a girl, have been born to first time mum Shiva and dad Kamal. These are the first Lion cubs for the Zoo in nearly 10 years, and are great news for this Critically Endangered species.

Update, 4 May: They have now been named Jayendra ("lord of victory") and Kalyana ("beautiful"), or Jay and Kaly (pronounced "Kally") for short.

Death: Colchester Zoo

Sasha the white Tiger has sadly died peacefully in his sleep. He was 15 years old and had been at the Zoo since 1998. He had been showing signs of illness for about two weeks, but was not responding to treatment. The results of investigations carried out before his death do not explain why he died, so a full post-mortem will be carried out.

Cai and Laing, the young Red Pandas born in June 2009, have moved to Amiens Zoo, France and Artis Zoo, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They have both joined new mates in the hope that they will form successful breeding pairs.

Arrival: Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre

An 11-month-old Sumatran Orangutan called Silvestre has arrived from Santillana Zoo, Spain, where he was born. He was abandoned at birth by his mother, then hand-reared by keepers. He has moved to Monkey World so that he can grow up with other Orang-Utans, including other orphans.

Milk Snakes have arrived. Their colouration mimics that of the deadly Coral Snake, but Milk Snakes are constrictors, and thus not venomous.

Giraffes Kelly and Bella (10-year-old mum and 1-year-old daughter) have arrived from Chester zoo, to join Sophie and Ruby who arrived earlier in the year.

A baby Asian Rhinoceros called Karamat has been born to mum Beluki. She was born breeched and as a result was traumatised and initially unable to suckle properly. Keepers hand-reared her for several days until she started feeding by herself from Beluki.

Uria the female Cheetah has temporarily been transferred to Paignton Zoo, in the hope that she will mate with Kasai, their male. While Uria is away, she will be replaced by Tosca, Paignton's female. It is also hoped that the temporary absence will encourage Tosca and Kasai to breed again once she returns to Paignton.

A pair of Chimpanzees called Bimbo (male) and Konda (female), both in their thirties, have arrived from a private zoo in Lubeck, Germany that is closing. The chimps had been rescued 20 years earlier from a circus.

A young (23 months) male Polar Bear called Walker has arrived from Rhenen Zoo, Holland. He will join resident female Mercedes until he matures in at least 3 years time, when he will be moved to a separate enclosure to become the Park's breeding male. In the meantime it is hoped that Mercedes will act as a mother-figure. The main reason for his move is that his half-sister, Freedom, is expecting another litter and he needed a new home before she retires to her cubbing den.

A baby female Rothschild Giraffe has been born, to mum Aoife and dad Thorn. She is the first pure Rothschild calf born at the Zoo and has been named Tula.

A pair of Clouded Leopard cubs have arrived from National Zoo, Washington DC. The cubs will turn one in February and May next year, and they have been paired in the hope they will breed successfully once mature.
