Birth: Bristol Zoo Gardens

A baby Western Lowland Gorilla named Kukena (pronounced "Kookenga") has been born, to mother Salome, her third. Her previous baby, Komale, was born in December 2006 after fertility treatment, but this time Kukena was conceived naturally. Jock, the zoo's silverback, is father to both. Update, 30 November: Kukena is now known to be a boy. |

A Common Hippo calf has been born, the first for parents Lola and Hoover. The calf is believed to be female, but this is as yet unconfirmed; in the meantime the youngster has been nicknamed Hula, a combination of its parents' names. |

Four Lion cubs have been born to first-time mum Malaika. They have been named Simba and Nala, after the Disney film characters, and Enzi and Nyota. |

Baby Yellow Mongoose twins have been born, to mum Matilda. They are believed to have been born in July, but have only now started to emerge from their burrow accompanied by their parents. These are the first of this species to have been born at the Park. |

Three Chinese Cochin Red Junglefowl chicks have hatched over the last few months, and can now be seen in the new Brilliant Birds walkthrough enclosure. Pure-bred members of this species are rare, both in captivity and in the wild, due to interbreeding with the domestic chicken, of which it is an ancestor. |

A pair of Asian Lion cubs have been born, the second for parents Abi and Lucifer in 2 years. The cubs have been nicknamed Pumpkin and Spook until they can be sexed and given permanent names. Update Dec 2011: The cubs are both female and have now been named Indi and Heidi. |
