Birth: Marwell Wildlife (Marwell Zoological Park)

A female baby Mishmi Takin called Mei-ling has been born to parents Mulan and Mooshu. This is the first time a baby of this seriously endangered species has been born in the UK. It is unknown how many are left in the wild, but their numbers are in decline due to habitat loss from farming, mining and logging operations.

A Chilean Flamingo has hatched and is being hand-reared by keepers due to its late season arrival. It will be re-introduced to flock in the spring, but in the meantime can be seen while being taken for walks by the keepers.

Two female Somali Wild Ass foals, called Nadifa and Jahzara, have been born to mums Possa and Tikva. This species is critically endangered with only a few hundred left in the wild, so these new births are good news for the breeding programme.

Three African Crowned Crane chicks, born 10 weeks ago, are now being slowly introduced to the Kingdom of the Wild mixed paddock.

A male Asiatic Lion called Tejas has been born to mother Asha, and is being hand-reared by keepers. He was born as one of a pair of male twins, but sadly his sibling was much smaller and not strong enough to survive. His birth is good news for the species, which is highly endangered with only 300-350 remaining in the wild.

Update: Tejas has now moved to Besancon Zoo, France, to be with two lionesses.
