Siberian Musk Deer twins have been born. The fawns, named Sergei and Dimitri, are the first offspring for parents Aleksei and Nina. The Siberian is the rarest of the four species of Musk Deer and is under threat due to hunting for the male's musk pod for use in Asian medicine and some perfumes. Females and fawns are also often killed in traps set for the males. Edinburgh is the only UK zoo where this species can be seen. |

A pair of Blue-Eyed Black Lemurs has arrived, from Mulhouse Zoo, France. It is hoped that Gila and Attila will settle into their new home quickly, and then breed. This is very important for this critically endangered species, with only around 100 left in the wild, and very few in captivity - too few, in fact, for a proper breeding programme to be set up. |

Five Cheetah cubs have been born - 3 males and 2 females - to mum Etna and father Cooper, the first to been born at the park. A key factor in breeding this species is allowing the females a wide choice of mates. To this end, Etna was temporarily moved to the sister collection at Banham Zoo, and this is where the cubs were conceived. Mother and cubs were initially held `off show' in a special breeding facility to give them privacy, but now (August) have access to an area where visitors can see them. |

A baby Barbary Lion called Lily has been born. She was unfortunately rejected by her mother soon after birth, and has since been hand-reared. Barbary Lions are extinct in the wild, and there are less than 100 in zoos worldwide (about 40 of them in Europe), so this birth is very good news for the species. |

A baby male Brazilian Tapir, called Zorro, has been born to parents Misha and Ryan. |

Jasmine the Colombian Black Spider Monkey is about to leave Colchester for Szeged Zoo in Hungary, where she will join the European Breeding Programme. Jasmine was born at Colchester on 17 December 2002, and had been fitted with a contraceptive implant when she reached sexual maturity in October 2006, to prevent her breeding with her relatives. The implant has now been removed in preparation for her move. |
