Death: Edinburgh Zoo

Ricky, the 50-year0old Chimpanzee, and the Zoo's oldest resident, has sadly passed away. He was starting to loose weight and looking out of sorts; routine tests including an X-ray revealed that he had a massively diseased heart. It was thought he had about 2 weeks of life left, but he passed away that afternoon. |

Diesel, the male Amur Leopard, has moved to Sedgwick County Zoo, Kansas as part of the international breeding programme. He was born in May 2002 and came to Twycross in 2003, where he has since sired a litter of two males in 2006. Twycross are now looking for a mate for their remaining male, Davidoff, who is one of Diesel's sons. |

Sofus the Patagonian Sea Lion will move to Lodz Zoo, Poland, at the beginning of February, to join two females called Kasia and Dolly, in the hope that they will breed in the future. This follows the sad death of Miranda, Edinburgh's resident female, a couple of months ago. The sea lion enclosure has also reached the end of its life, and will be redeveloped to create a new home for the Zoo's Northern Rockhopper Penguin colony. |

A pair of Ground Cuscus (a type of marsupial) called Bruce and Aru have gone on-show following their arrival a few months ago. |

Nine baby Ocellated Freshwater Stingrays, known as pups, have been born. The mothers, Catalina and Genevieve, are sisters and arrived from Weston Seaquarium last year. They have been removed from the display tank to keep them safe from predation by its other occupants. They will be re-homed once bigger and stronger. |

Two female Musk Ox have arrived from Holland. They are mother and daughter and should be joined by a male later this year. |

Ashme, one of the three Tiger cubs born in October, has sadly died following a short illness. The cause is as yet unknown and a post-mortem will be carried out. The other two cubs seem to be in good health, and have been named Nila and Tila. |

A baby female Bonobo has been born, to mum Maringa. She is being hand-reared by keepers until old enough to be returned to auntie Diatou, who has been trained to act as foster mum; Maringa has had difficulty raising young in the past. Update (March): the baby has now been named Lopori. |

New animal species for this year include Northern Tree Shrews, which will reside in the Pets Area, and Banded and Dwarf Mongoose. Some of these have already arrived, but are being held off-show until warmer weather allows them to be introduced to their new enclosures. |

Another baby male Malayan Tapir called Manado has been born, the second in just 4 months, this time to mum Malacca. Hunter is the father to both. |

Two Lesser Antillean Iguanas have hatched, the first time in 11 years these rare Iguanas have bred successfully at the Park. |

Ten Humboldt Penguin chicks have hatched, two of which are being hand-reared by keepers after being rejected by their parents. |
