Arrival: Chester Zoo

A 4-year-old female Rothschild Giraffe called Dagmar has arrived from Denmark. She was selected as a perfect genetic match for resident male Thorn, to form a new breeding pair for this rare Giraffe sub-species. With only less than 670 left in the wild, the species has recently been classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, due to loss of habitat in their native Kenya and Uganda. |

Three young Rothschild's Giraffes have arrived: Daisy, a 2-year-old female, has come from Givskud Zoo in Denmark; Sandsteen (Sandy), also a 2-year-old female, has come from Dublin Zoo; and Finn, a 3-year-old male, has come from Fota Wildlife Park, Cork. The new arrivals bring the Belfast herd to a total of 9. |

A number of Meerkat pups have been born; two of them, the offspring of mum Pippa and dad Robbie, have been named Louie and Spence after the celebrity dance expert. Other recent births include Squirrel Monkeys, Buffy Headed Capuchins, a Mandrill and a Cherry Crowned Mangabey - something of a primate baby boom.. |

A baby Orangutan has been born, the first at the zoo since 2004, to mum Maliku and dad Batu. The sex of the baby is as yet unknown, as keepers have not been able to get close enough. |

A female Asian Elephant calf has been born, the second at the Zoo in just 6 months. This time it's Thi who is the mother. She is also the mother of Sithami who gave birth to Nayan last July. The father of both calves is Upali. The new calf has been named Jamilah. |

Cleo the Caracal Lynx has sadly died peacefully in her sleep . She was 11 years old and had been at the Park with her sister Clio since 2003. |

Linoa and Andry, the Crowned Sifakas, have given birth to a baby boy called Echo. Great news for this Critically Endangered species, for which numbers are so low in the wild that exact figures are unknown. This is also the last breeding pair in the British Isles and they are on loan from the Madagascan government. The new arrival brings Belfast's group total to 5. |

Recent births at the zoo farm include 7 piglets to parents Lady and Napoleon on 7 November, Dee Dee, a baby African Pygmy Goat, to parents Edmund and Hannah on 18 November, and the 2010 births were completed by the arrival of Brooke, a female Miniature Donkey, for parents Miss Ellie and Dylan on 29 December. |

Kiki, a female Chimpanzee, has arrived following rescue from the Lebanon, where she was kept in a small cage for 9 years. She had originally been taken from the wild as a baby by African hunters who killed the rest of her family to obtain her (an unfortunately common occurrence), then smuggled into the Lebanon. |

800 juvenile Giant Clams have arrived, following confiscation by the UK Borders Agency; they were being imported illegally from the Cook Islands. Some of them will be kept for display to visitors, the rest will be passed on to other collections. |
