Baby Howler Monkey born. The mother, Tolkein, successfully underwent an operation 18 months ago to restore her sight, having become totally blind from cataracts as a juvenile. |

A litter of 11 African Hunting Dogs (also known as Cape Hunting Dogs or Painted Dogs) has been born. The species is one of Africa's most endangered mammals, with only around 4000 left in the wild, and still declining. |

The young bull Elephant, Nissim, recently broke a tusk while sparring with one of the older females. This has resulted in him needing a two and a half hour operation to remove some infected tooth and filling the gap. Nissim is now back to his old self, but with a missing tusk. |

Two new lemur species have arrived from Blackpool Zoo: 4 Ring-Tailed and 3 Black. These are destined for the new walk-through Madagascan exhibit currently under construction, but are currently on display in a temporary enclosure in the Walled Garden. |

Neo the Giraffe has been put down to relieve his suffering resulting from poor leg bone development arising from his rejection by his mother and subsequent hand-rearing. His condition had worsened considerably over the last 2 months as he grew and put on weight, resulting in excessive stress on his joints. |
