Arrival: Colchester Zoo

A new Essex Pig sow has arrived, along with her litter of 8 piglets, who were just 1 day old when they arrived. Other new arrivals in the zoo's Family Friends area include 3 Narragansett Turkeys, 3 Transylvanian Naked Necked Chickens, and 2 Light Sussex Chickens. Three new young female Giant Continental Rabbits have also arrived. |

A male Przewalski's Horse called Nikki has arrived from Mautern Zoo, Austria, to join the resident mares Attie, Jane and Tuli as part of the European breeding programme. |

Three baby Rothschild's Giraffes have been born, on July 23 and 26, and August 15. Called Sallagh, Cotton, and Moon, they have all been named after Northern Irish towns that begin with `Bally'. The zoo's Giraffes are part of a successful European Breeding Programme; Belfast Zoo alone has celebrated 28 births in 12 years. |

A young female Black and White Ruffed Lemur called Liberty has arrived from Cricket St. Thomas Wildlife Park, to join resident male Louis. Although classified as Endangered and declining in the wild, it is unlikely this pair will be used for breeding as the species is relatively common in zoos and derived from only a few founder animals. |

The female Red Panda that gave birth last month has sadly had to be put to sleep due to suffering from an aggressive cancer. The baby, now called Maggie, is being hand-reared by keepers and doing well. |

A baby Emperor Tamarin has been born to parents Rosie and Alfie. Rosie is an experienced mum, but this the first baby for this pairing. This species, one of the smallest Tamarins, is highly endangered due to habitat loss, so this birth to a new pairing is particularly good news for the breeding programme. |
Arrival: Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre

A two-year-old orphaned Orang-Utan called Lingga has arrived from the Menagerie de Jardin Des Plantes, Paris, to join the Orang-Utan crèche at Monkey World where orphans from across Europe are raised together under the care of adoptive super-mum A-mei. Lingga was rejected by her mother as a baby, and the keepers hand-reared her and tried for two years to re-integrate her with adults without success. She is already settling in well alongside other youngsters in the group from Russia, Germany and also Monkey World itself. |

A baby Buffy-Headed Capuchin has been born to experienced parents Wicket and Little Man. Also known as Yellow-Breasted Capuchins, these primates are critically endangered with less than 300 left in the wild, due to habitat destruction and fragmentation of its native Amazon and Atlantic Rainforests of Brazil. |

A baby male Cherry-Crowned Mangabey (a type of primate) has been born to experienced parents Michelle and Sputnik. This species is highly endangered due to deforestation and hunting for the bush meat trade in its native Nigeria. |

A female Lowland Anoa calf has been born. This is one of the smallest of wild cattle species, and is endangered in its native Sulawesi (Indonesia) due to habitat destruction and hunting; only a few thousand are left in the wild. This birth is therefore good news for the species, and the European breeding programme (EEP). |
