A baby female Brazilian Tapir called Yarah has been born to parents Tanya and Shannon, making their tenth since they arrived in 1990. |

Two young Marabou Storks have arrived from Emmen Zoo, Netherlands, and are currently off-show in winter quarters. The zoo's existing pair are also currently off-show in a new breeding aviary. A juvenile female Oriental White Stork has also arrived, from the Tierpark, Berlin, as part of the European breeding programme for this endangered species. It is hoped that a second female will also join her, to keep her company until she is old enough to breed. |

A female baby Pygmy Hippopotamus has been born, to parents Wendy and Antone. Good news for this Endangered species, which is threatened by habitat loss and civil unrest in its native West Africa. There are less than 3000 left in the wild. Update: the baby has now been named Lola. |

Three Dorcas Gazelles have been born, in the space of just of few days (8, 13, and 16 November). They have been named Piper, Rocket and Rooster after varieties of potato - their father is called Spud. This is the smallest species of Gazelle and is classed as Vulnerable, being threatened by illegal hunting and habitat loss. |

A baby Eastern Black Rhino has been born, to mum Kitani, the first at the zoo for 10 years. Great news for this highly endangered species, with only about 700 left in the wild. Update: the baby is a male and has been named Asani. |

An Eastern Bongo called Bozo has been born, to mum Willa and father Embu, bringing the number at the zoo to 8. Good news for this endangered species, with only about 75-140 left in the wild. |

Djambe the female Orang Utan has sadly died. She suffered a heart attack following the rupture of an ovarian cyst. The cyst had been discovered during her move to a new enclosure at the beginning of the month and surgery was planned once she had recovered from the move. However, it's now clear that the surgery would not have been viable anyway. Djambe was born in 1978 and arrived at Colchester in 1998. |
