Description

The Mossburn Animal Centre is primarily an animal rescue centre, but visitors are very welcome to come and see the current range of animal residents. The range is constantly changing as more animals are rescued, and others are found new homes or re-released into the wild. The centre was originally set up in 1987 to provide help for misused, abused, unwanted and neglected horses and ponies, and provide help for young people with physical and mental problems. This has since been expanded to include all domestic animals, except cats, dogs and donkeys, which have their own charities to help them. The centre also nurses, rehabilitates and re-releases wildlife. The range of animals that visitors will see at the centre therefore typically includes horses, ponies, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and a variety of smaller pet animals, together with a selection of local wildlife and a few exotic animals such as raccoons, emus, and an iguana.

How To Get There:

By Car

Mossburn Animal Centre is located on the road between Dalton and Lochmaben, near Lockerbie in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland.

Note for Satnav users: the postcode above does not appear to correspond to the Animal Centre itself - follow the directions below, or the brown tourist signs, when you get close.

From Carlisle and M6 south:

Follow the A74 north-west, from the end of the M6, to Gretna. Follow the dual carriageway onto the A74(M), then take the slip road left onto the A75 towards Dumfries. Continue on the A75 west past the town of Annan, then about 1 mile after the last turning (B723) for Annan, fork right onto the B7020 towards Dalton and Lochmaben. Continue on the B7020 through the village of Dalton and on towards Lochmaben. After about a further 4 miles, turn left at the brown tourist sign for Mossburn Animal Centre, then take the next turning right into the centre.

From M74 and A74(M) north:

Leave the A74(M) at junction 17 (Lockerbie). Follow the signs through Lockerbie to take the A709 towards Lochmaben and Dumfries. This will most likely mean following the B7076 to bypass the town centre, then turn left onto the slip road up to the A709 where it crosses the A74(M) (and B7076), and then turn right onto the A709. Continue on the A709 over a bridge (over the River Annan) with traffic light control, then take the next turning left onto an unclassified road towards Hightae. Take the next turning right (signposted for Heck), and continue along this road, through the small village of Heck, to its end at a T junction with the B7020. Turn left onto the B7020 towards Dalton and Annan. After about a further 1 mile, turn right at the brown tourist sign for Mossburn Animal Centre, then next right again into the centre itself.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to use the unclassified roads through Heck, continue on the A709 from the River Annan bridge into Lochmaben, then turn left around the Castle Loch onto the B7020 towards Dalton and Annan. The turning for the Mossburn Animal Centre will then be on the right after about 2.5 miles.

From Dumfries (and A75 west, or A76 north-west):

From Dumfries town centre, follow the A709 east towards Lochmaben and Lockerbie. From the A75 Dumfries bypass, turn onto the A709 towards Lochmaben and Lockerbie at the roundabout. In both cases, follow the A709 through Torthorwald and on into Lochmaben. Continue through the centre of Lochmaben, then turn right onto the B7020, towards Dalton and Annan, as you reach the Castle Loch. Continue south on the B7020 for about 2.5 miles, then turn right at the brown tourist sign for Mossburn Animal Centre, then next right again into the centre itself.
