Description
The Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World is located in Dobbies Garden World, Scotland's largest garden centre, on the A772 just off the Edinburgh City Bypass. The main attraction is an indoor rain forest, housed in a large greenhouse and featuring a natural-looking landscape with waterfalss, ponds, and a host of exotic flowering plants. In this area over 300 species of butterfly can be seen over the course of a year; different species being active at different times. The butterflies fly free around visitors, along with exotic birds. There are also green iguanas, fish and terrapins.
A separate `Bugs and Beasties' exhibition features a variety of frogs, scorpions, and insects such as tarantulas, stick insects, and leaf-cutting ants.
The Reptile Room includes a collection of lizards, chameleons, giant pythons, and other snakes. It also includes a Nocturnal Zone with glow-in-the-dark scorpions and other creatures normally active at night.
Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World also holds twice daily `Meet the Beasties' sessions where visitors can hold a selection of creatures such as a giant millipede, tarantula, and a Royal Python. The snakes are also fed on Friday afternoons, and special spider phobia busting workshops are also available.
